What Makes Ocean City Unlike Any Other Jersey Shore Town
Standing Tradition and City Regulations
A few of the traditions that make Ocean City stand apart from other Jersey Shore towns? For starters, it’s a dry island, meaning no alcohol is served in restaurants or sold in stores. You can bring your own spirits onto the island, but public consumption isn’t allowed. This policy helps maintain the calm, family-friendly atmosphere that so many visitors cherish.
Another unique feature: you won’t find towering high-rise hotels here. Thanks to long-standing local regulations, and passionate residents, you won’t see buildings rising more than three stories, preserving the town’s small-scale charm and relaxed feel. There are a few iconic and historical buildings around that break this rule, but they were grandfathered in, so we’ll let them slide.

A Walk on the Boardwalk
Ocean City’s boardwalk is a defining feature of the town. Stretching for 2.5 miles along the beach, it’s a hub of activity for all ages. From renting bikes or surreys in the morning for a breezy ride before the crowds set in, to a romantic stroll in the evening as the sky turns pink and the glow of the amusement rides lights up the horizon, there is something for everyone.
The boardwalk is packed with mini golf courses, classic arcades, sweet shops, and family-friendly attractions. You’ll find no shortage of pizza joints (Manco & Manco, anyone?), ice cream stands, and souvenir stores. In the evenings you can even catch a mummer’s parade or other local musicians along the boards, adding a hint of nostalgia and live entertainment.

Downtown Shopping on Asbury Avenue
If you are looking for entertainment beyond the boardwalk, Asbury Avenue offers a charming downtown shopping district with a more laid-back vibe. Tree-lined streets are dotted with boutiques, surf shops, bookstores, galleries, and specialty stores that make browsing a pleasure. Whether you’re on the hunt for a beach read, the perfect sun hat, or a quirky gift, Asbury Avenue has something for everyone. Some favorite stops include:

- Stainton’s Gallery of Shops: Once upon a time I worked and managed this delightful co-op of shops. Browse a collection of local artisan booths offering handmade crafts, art, gifts, and more all in one place.
- Hoy’s 5 & 10: A nostalgic five-and-dime shop that’s been part of Ocean City for generations. Great for beach toys, souvenirs, and just about everything else.
- Heritage Surf & Sport or Seventh Street Surf Shop: A go-to spot for beach gear, surfboards, and trendy clothing.
- Ta-Dah! or Making Waves: Two boutique shops filled with fun fashion finds, accessories, and unique gifts with plenty of flair.
- B&B Department Store – Affordable beach apparel and summer must-haves for the whole family.
In the winter, when the rest of the town is sleepy with inactivity, Asbury Avenue comes alive with a winter parade, Santa Claus pictures with iconic OCNJ landmarks, and top-notch holiday shopping.
A Guide to Planning Your Next Ocean City, NJ Vacation
As a travel agent and longtime summer resident of this charming city, I’ve curated a guide with all of the best eats, stays and activities in Ocean City, NJ. Consider this your one stop shop to everything you need to know before planning your own Ocean City, NJ vacation.
Where to Eat in OCNJ: Classic Favorites
Ocean City has a surprisingly diverse food scene. I mention some of my personal favorites below, but food is subjective and in OCNJ you will not lack for options. Whether you’re craving boardwalk bites or sit-down meals, there’s something here for everyone.

⚠️Fair warning: Don’t Feed the Birds! The seagulls can be ruthless scavengers. If you are enjoying food on the boardwalk, anything from pizza, fries or even ice cream, keep it covered if you want to keep it. Recently, the city has deployed falconers to help with the issue, so keep your eyes peeled for these hooded beauties as you walk the boards, but the problem still does persist, so be aware.
Breakfast and Coffee
- Ocean City Coffee Company: There are locations both on the boardwalk and on Asbury Ave. Their locally roasted coffee and cozy ambiance make it a go-to spot for caffeine lovers.
- Yianni’s Café: A Greek diner on Asbury Ave serves hearty meals with a smile.
- Brown’s Donuts: On the boardwalk between St. Charles and 1st St. There’s often a line, but these made-to-order donuts are worth every minute of the wait.
- Oves Restaurant: On the boardwalk at 4th St. They serve more than breakfast, but the great thing about grabbing breakfast here is that they have onsite bike and surrey rentals, so you can eat and ride, or vis versa.
- Sand House Kitchen: Shhhh! It’s a local secret and can get quite busy so show up early.
- Uncle Bill’s Pancake House: This is another local favorite and there are 2 locations, Asbury and 21st St. and West and 40th Street.
Lunch and Dinner
- Rojo’s Tacos: On 6th and Ocean, this cash only Mexican hotspot is a must try.
- Ike’s Famous Crabcakes on the Boardwalk, between 13th and 14th.
- Clancy’s by the Sea: On the Boardwalk between 12th and 13th St. This casual seafood sit-down restaurant has excellent atmosphere and sea views.
- Ocean City Pizza Co.: On the Boardwalk at 5th St. I tried this place recently and was blown away by their Jersey style pizza.
- Manco & Manco Pizza: There are many locations across the city. It’s a must try Ocean City staple.
- Chickie’s & Pete’s: If you haven’t had crab fries (french fries covered in Old Bay seasoning) do yourself a favor.
- Spadafora’s Seafood: On Haven Ave, between 9th and 10th St. This take away seafood stop serves up fresh Jersey shore favorites.
Desserts For Days
You will find just about anything from italian ice to fried oreos and icecream to gelati, but here are two of my favorites.
- Khor Bros: Serval locations throughout the Boardwalk. This soft serve icecream is a Boardwalk staple, serving creative twist combos, like chocolate and mint and orange creamsicle.
- Bashful Bananas: On the boardwalk between 9th and 10th St. Healthy frozen banana whip treats are a welcomed change after days of Khor Bros. and fried Boardwalk treats.
- Johnson’s Popcorn: There are a few location on the boardwalk. Their caramel popcorn is renowned.
- Shriver’s: There are many taffy, fudge a sweet shops along the boards, this just happens to be my personal favorite.

- Bike Rentals: Cruise the boardwalk in the morning on bikes or a 4 or 6 person Surrey (no bikes allowed after 11:00AM) or take a longer ride along the island’s other bike-friendly paths.

When is the Best Time to Go?

Peak Season
Ocean City shines brightest in the summer, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the boardwalk is bustling, the beaches are guarded, and nearly every shop and restaurant is open daily. This is peak season and the most vibrant time to visit, with plenty of family activities and perfect beach weather. This also means beaches will be crowded and street parking will be a challenge.
Shoulder Season
If you prefer fewer crowds, consider the shoulder seasons—May and September are particularly pleasant, with warm temperatures, open businesses, and a more relaxed vibe. Fall also brings beautiful weather and quieter streets, making it a great time for strolls and scenic photography. The one down fall is that the ocean temperatures tend to drop at this time making for a chilly dip.
Holidays
Winter in Ocean City is calm but cozy. While many businesses close for the season, the town still comes alive for Christmas shopping weekends, festive decorations, and events like the Downtown Holiday Parade and First Night New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s a different kind of magic—and worth experiencing if you love the charm of small-town holiday spirit.
Where to Stay in OCNJ
Ocean City is best known for its thriving home rental market—from beachfront condos to charming cottages and spacious multi-family homes, there are rental options to suit all group sizes and budgets. Many families return to the same rental year after year, creating a home-away-from-home tradition that adds to the town’s nostalgic appeal.
If you’re looking for more traditional accommodations, consider:
- The Flanders Hotel – Located right off the boardwalk, this historic hotel offers elegant suites and family-friendly amenities, plus a spa and restaurant on site.
- The Scarborough Inn – Ocean City’s oldest B&B, full of Victorian charm and warm hospitality. It’s located just a few blocks from the beach and downtown.
- Coastal Chateau – This historical property was built in 1905 and renovated many times over the years until it was purchased in 2024 and transformed into the posh coastal chateau you see today, steps from the OC boardwalk and beach.
Pro TIP: Book early! As I mentioned many regulars book the same rentals year after year, so book at least a year ahead if you can manage it.
