Top Tier Destinations to Become a Professional Diver
Back in 2013, while backpacking across the globe, I discovered scuba diving, and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. I fell head over fins for the underwater world, and by the time I returned home, I knew I couldnโt go back to corporate life. I made the decision then and there to pursue diving as a full-time career. Over a decade later, after teaching, guiding, and mentoring divers in Thailand, Mexico, and the Caribbean, Iโm passionate about helping future Divemasters and Instructors find the best places to start their own journeys.
If youโre ready to turn your love for diving into a profession, choosing the right location for your training is one of the most important decisions youโll make. You need access to quality mentorship, diverse dive environments, and the time and freedom to build real-world experience. In my professional opinion, a two-week, rough-shod course is not the way to build the skills you need to be a competent and confident professional. If you are serious about making diving a profession you need a fully immersive program.
I can assure you that the destinations I recommend below offer exactly that and more.
Why “Divemaster Factories” Offer the Best Learning Experience

Drawing from my years of experience training and working around the world, Iโve put together a list of my top three destinations for Divemaster and Instructor courses. With all transparency, some critics may refer to these destinations as โDivemaster Factories,โ but I’ll let you in on a little secret: that’s not a bad thing. In fact, I see it as one of their greatest strengths.
These locations strike the perfect balance of:
- Accessibility
- Affordability (so you can afford to stay as long as you need)
- Variety in Diving Sites and Conditions
- Consistent Stream of Business
- Top-tier Instruction
Here’s another secret that those critics I mentioned above don’t want you to know: Places that turn out a lot of divemaster’s also tend to turn out a lot of divers in general. That means that these destinations offer ideal training conditions for budding professionals, not just because of their diverse dive sites and generally calm seas, but because they attract a constant flow of travelers and divers of all levels.
This steady demand means boats are heading out daily, providing ample opportunities to develop your guiding and navigation skills, assist on real courses, or simply log dives to build your experience. You’ll also find a full pipeline of training, from Open Water to Rescue to Instructor, run by seasoned professionals whose techniques and teaching styles you can observe and learn from firsthand.
Top 3 Best Places for Professional Scuba Diver Training
Koh Tao, Thailand

Why Itโs Great:
I may be a little biased because this is where I did most of my training. Koh Tao is a true global hotspot for dive training, drawing a big community of backpackers and divers of all skill levels. Known as the “Divemaster Factory,” it offers one of the highest concentrations of dive schools in the world.
It’s location in the Gulf of Thailand means the conditions are mainly calm and the visibility is stellar. That doesn’t mean you won’t get any practice in low-vis diving, just try the HTMS Sattakut and you’ll know what I mean. It also has a variety of dive sites that are ideal for practicing different types of navigation, an immensely important skill for any dive professional to master. The island is budget-friendly, welcoming, and full of dive pros from all over the globe, which makes it an ideal place to learn and network.
How to Get There:
Fly into Bangkok (BKK) or Surat Thani (URT). From either city, you can take a bus and ferry combo (via Lomprayah or Songserm) to reach Koh Tao in 6-8 hours.

- Shark Island
- Green Rock
- Twins
- HTMS Sattakut (Wreck Dive)
- Japanese Gardens
- Aow Leuk Bay
Top 5 Dive Centers:
- Ban’s Diving Resort โ (PADI) I am partial to this shop as it is where I did all of my training up to Divemaster. It’s one of the largest certifying centers globally which mean it has vast resources. They also have an excellent eco program for the resort and dive center, and it is owned and run by a Thai woman (pretty unusual).
- Big Blue Diving โ (SSI) Known for large-scale pro programs and experienced instructors.
- Crystal Dive โ (SSI) Offers both Divemaster and Instructor Development Courses (IDC) with award-winning staff.
- Roctopus Dive โ (RAID) Popular with younger divers, known for fun and solid instruction.
- Master Divers โ (PADI) Smaller groups and a more personalized learning environment.
Roatan, Honduras

Why Itโs Great:
Situated along the vibrant Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, Roatรกn boasts exceptional visibility, thriving coral ecosystems, and a relaxed, budget-friendly Caribbean lifestyle. For divers traveling from the U.S., itโs also a more convenient option compared to the other destinations on this list.
The island is home to a strong expat community of passionate divers and features a wide range of dive shops that specialize in training Divemaster and Instructor candidates. Much like Koh Tao, Roatรกn sees a steady influx of divers and students of all levels, ensuring constant opportunities for hands-on learning and professional development.
How to Get There:
Fly into Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB) on Roatan. There are direct flights from major U.S. cities like Miami, Dallas, and Houston.

Puerto Galera, Philippines

Why Itโs Great:
A lesser-known gem compared to Koh Tao and Roatรกn, Puerto Galera is a fantastic destination for aspiring dive professionals looking for world-class training without the crowds. Located just a few hours from Manila, this coastal town is nestled along the Verde Island Passage, one of the most biodiverse marine corridors on the planet.
Puerto Galera is famous for its exceptional macro life, colorful coral reefs, and dramatic underwater topographyโincluding canyons, wrecks, and drop-offsโoffering a wide range of environments to practice guiding, navigation, and teaching techniques. Expect to find highly experienced instructors and a close-knit dive community here, making it easy to find mentorship and build meaningful connections.
Its affordable cost of living, consistent influx of new divers, and protected marine sanctuary status make it an ideal setting to complete your Divemaster or Instructor training while logging countless dives in a truly vibrant ecosystem.
How to Get There:
Fly into Manila (MNL), then travel overland to Batangas Pier (2-3 hours by car or bus), followed by a 1-hour ferry to Puerto Galera.

- Canyons
- Sabang Wrecks

How to Get the Most Out of Your Divemaster or Instructor Course

Iโve seen everything from quick, two-week divemaster programs to other programs that allow candidates to truly immerse themselves over several months. If you’re serious about taking on the responsibilityโand liabilityโthat comes with being a dive professional, I strongly recommend the latter. When shopping around for the best location or dive shop to complete your training with consider the following:
Take Your Time
If a shop is trying to push you through the requirements quickly then walk away. There are a lot of skills to hone when becoming a professional diver and never forget that you have people’s lives in your hands 60-100 feet underwater. The best programs will allow you ample time to learn and practice these skills. In my opinion you should spend no less than a month on a Divemaster course. I spent 4 months earning mine.
Never Stop Learning
The best divemaster’s and instructors do not come from any particular certification agency; they are the ones who never stop learning from others. Assist on as many courses as you can or join and observe guided dives frequently. You will come across terrible professionals and stellar ones, learn from them both. Sometimes the greatest lessons are what not to do.
Dive, Dive, Dive
The best way to hone your skills is to put them into practice, a lot. The best professional dive programs will offer you unlimited “fun” dives during your course. This means free tank fills and the ability to jump a dive boat or shore dive with a buddy as often as you can. I’m pretty sure I was under water every single day of my 4-month program.
Dive Boat Practice
Learning how to work a dive boat is an invaluable skill in the job market. Tying up to a buoy, docking, tending to guests onboard, and getting divers on and off the boat in an orderly fashion (especially in challenging sea conditions) are valuable skills to attain. Also, pay attention to both the safety and dive briefings. Aside from dive briefings, this is not usually a part of the divemaster curriculum, but with a little extra effort and attention you can pick up what you need.
Extra tip: get friendly with your captain. They have incredible knowledge to impart and are usually more than happy to teach you about boating safety
Never Stop Having Fun
This is the greatest job in the world. Becoming a scuba professional means the ocean is your office and you get to introduce people to the most incredible and alien ecosystem on the planet, so always keep that sense of wonder. There are certainly stresses involved, but one of our greatest strengths as dive professionals is our ability to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere for our guests that keeps them coming back again and again.
Final Thoughts from a Dive Professional

Becoming a Divemaster or Instructor isnโt just about earning a certificationโitโs about stepping into a global tribe of like-minded adventurers and ocean lovers. While not everyone can afford to take several months off for immersive training, many find the benefits are well worth the commitment. Beyond the technical skills youโll gain, extended programs give you the chance to truly absorb the lifestyle, build confidence through real-world practice, and create lasting bonds with fellow divers. Some of my closest friendships began during my time in Koh Tao, and even though weโve since scattered across the world into different careers and countries, we still stay connected through the shared memories and love of the sea that brought us together.
Whether youโre guiding your first dive in Koh Tao, team teaching on the reefs of Roatan, or assisting a Discover Scuba course in Puerto Galera, each of these destinations offers something unique. These three destinations offer that rare balance of top-tier diving, strong mentorship, and an inspiring lifestyle to match.
My advice? Choose a place that not only challenges you professionally but also excites you personally. If youโre ready to go pro, thereโs never been a better timeโor a better placeโto start.
