Honest Review: My Stay at the Historic Banyan House in Venice Beach, FL
Finding a place to stay in Venice, Florida isn’t exactly difficult. You’ve got your budget friendly motels, beachfront resorts, familiar hotel chains, vacation rentals, and condos scattered throughout the area. But if you’re looking for something with a little more personality, Banyan House offers a completely different experience.
Located on Venice Island, between historic downtown Venice and the Gulf, Banyan House is a small, historic property with just ten individually styled accommodations. Instead of hotel hallways and identical rooms, you’ll find individually named and appointed rooms, tropical gardens, a heated pool and hot tub, a massive banyan tree, apartments with kitchens, complimentary bicycles, beach equipment, and even shark tooth hunting gear.
It’s quirky, but also incredibly charming, like stepping back into the Spanish-influenced, sun-faded elegance of “Old Florida,” long before high-rise resorts and beachfront developments transformed the Gulf Coast.
As a travel advisor and someone who has spent years traveling, living, and working in tourism around the world, I tend to look at hotels a little differently these days. When I stay somewhere, I’m not only asking myself whether I enjoyed it. I’m thinking about which of my clients I would send there, what type of traveler would appreciate it, whether the experience justifies the price, and what someone should know before booking.
So, is Banyan House one of the best places to stay in Venice, Florida? Here’s my honest review.
Banyan House at a Glance
Banyan House is located at 519 South Harbor Drive on Venice Island, less than a mile from the beach and about a mile from the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Venice.
The Mediterranean-style house dates back to 1926 and was originally built as a private residence. Today, the property has just ten accommodations, including traditional guestrooms, kitchenette suites, and one-bedroom apartments with full kitchens. It honestly feels like the perfect marriage of a privately owned B&B and a full-service hotel or vacation rental.
The property also has a heated swimming pool and hot tub, gorgeous tropical gardens, a koi pond, a billiards room, laundry facilities, complimentary parking, bicycles, beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, and even shark tooth hunting equipment.
In other words, this isn’t really a traditional hotel. And that is a big part of its appeal.
Best for: Couples, solo travelers, longer stays, weekend getaways, shark tooth hunters, and travelers who prefer small, independent accommodations over large hotels.
I would think twice if: You want a beachfront resort, contemporary luxury hotel, extensive onsite dining, or the amenities and service structure of a traditional full-service hotel. Additionally, this may not be the best accommodation for families with young children given the antique decor.
First Impressions: This Isn’t Your Typical Florida Hotel
One of the things I appreciate most when traveling is finding a property that actually feels connected to its destination. Banyan House certainly checks that box.
When you arrive, you aren’t pulling into a sprawling resort complex or walking into a sterile hotel lobby. The property feels warm and inviting, like you’ve stumbled upon someone’s wonderfully eccentric historic Florida home. The Mediterranean-style architecture, mature tropical landscaping, koi pond, waterfall, pool, gardens, and especially the enormous banyan tree immediately give the property character.
And that banyan tree isn’t just landscaping.
According to Banyan House, the tree was a gift from Thomas Edison, who was a friend of the home’s original owners, Robert and Dorothy Marvin. It’s a small piece of local history.
The interiors follow the same philosophy. Don’t come expecting minimalist beige furniture and a sleek hotel aesthetic. Banyan House embraces its history and has a much more eclectic, residential feel. Whether you find that charming or dated will probably depend heavily on your personal taste, but I personally was in awe.
I’m into boutique stays and would rather stay somewhere with character than somewhere that looks exactly like 500 other hotel rooms. But travelers who strongly prefer modern, contemporary design should look closely at photos of their specific room before booking.
That’s particularly important here because no two accommodations are exactly alike.
The Rooms at Banyan House:
Know What You’re Booking
One of the most important things to understand before booking Banyan House is that the accommodations vary considerably.
There are just ten units: two guestrooms, three kitchenette suites, and five one-bedroom apartments with full kitchens.
That means choosing the right room matters much more here than it would at a traditional hotel where the difference between categories might simply be a king bed versus two queens.

My Room at Banyan House
The Laurel Room
I stayed in the Laurel Room, a guestroom located on the second floor of the main house, directly up the stairs.
The first thing I noticed was how the traditional and antique decor from the common area also seeped into the room: the Venetian molding and wallpaper finishes, the stained-glass ceiling fixture and original hardwood floors were all stunning.
Next, I noticed the personal touches waiting for us on the bistro set: a complimentary bottle of wine, chocolates and a handwritten note welcoming us to the property.
In a world where so often, these personal touches are forgotten or foregone, this was such a pleasant surprise.
The room included a queen bed, small desk, a bistro set, a tv with cable and streaming, a coffee maker, microwave and mini fridge/freezer in the closet, and a small ensuite bathroom with a standing shower.
I found the room quiet and cozy at night. The mattress and bedding were very comfortable, and I was happy to find two suitcase stands for us to place our luggage on. The air conditioning worked very well, although the unit was leaking onto the floor. We simply placed a towel underneath and told the owned about it the next day. He was very attentive to the issue, so I am sure the problem was resolved. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly in the room and around the property, and the bathroom, while small, was perfectly appointed with all of the toiletries you’d expect from a standard hotel stay.
The only issue I’d find with the bathroom was the very large step into the shower. It was fine for us, since we are relatively young and limber, but I could see it being an issue with older patrons with mobility issues.
This is also where the age of the property is worth keeping in mind. Historic accommodations come with character, but character sometimes comes with quirks. I don’t necessarily consider that a negative, but travelers should understand what they’re choosing.
Altogether, the thoughtfully appointed room definitely felt more like a quaint bed & breakfast stay than a traditional hotel room.
Which Room Type Should You Book?
For a short Venice getaway, one of the traditional guestrooms or kitchenette suites may be all you need. For a longer stay, however, I would consider one of the one-bedroom apartments.
Having a separate living area and full kitchen changes the experience considerably, particularly if you’re staying for a week or using Venice as a base for exploring Florida’s Gulf Coast.
A kitchen can also save money if you don’t want to eat every meal at a restaurant.
My advice is simple: don’t choose solely based on the cheapest available rate, consider your need and the type of experience you are looking for.
Banyan House offers accommodations that fit just about any need. Look at the photos and amenities of the individual unit and choose the accommodation that fits the way you actually travel.
The Grounds May Be Banyan House’s Best Feature
As charming as the rooms are, the property itself is one of the biggest reasons to stay at Banyan House. The grounds feel surprisingly lush and secluded for a property in the heart of Venice Island. Most travelers come to Venice for the beaches and fossil hunting, but between the shade of the massive banyan tree, the koi pond, tropical landscaping, and quiet courtyard, you may find yourself lingering at the property longer than you expected.
The Pool and Hot Tub
At the far side of the outdoor area is a heated swimming pool surrounded by tropical landscaping and ample lounge areas.
The walls and trees surrounding the property made the area feel private and quiet. The pool was a comfortable temperature that you could easily enjoy during the day and into the evening. Unlike a large resort pool surrounded by dozens or hundreds of rooms, this feels much more residential.
For me, that’s part of the appeal of staying somewhere this small.
The hot tub was a lovely respite after spending the day walking around Venice, biking, and digging through sand and gravel looking for shark teeth. It was clean and well maintained, however, the chemicals were extremely strong on the night we used it. Our stinging eyes made the experience much less relaxing than we hoped for. I understand the need to keep public hot tubs sterilized, but perhaps just a little less chemical would be ideal.
Tropical Gardens, Koi Pond and Waterfall
Throughout the property you’ll find tropical plants, seating areas, a koi pond, and a small waterfall. These aren’t necessarily amenities you’d choose a hotel for on their own, but collectively they create an atmosphere that’s difficult to replicate at a standard hotel.
There are little areas where you can sit with coffee in the morning or relax after coming back from the beach, and each has a supply of bug spray at hand (because this is Florida after all).
And because there are only ten accommodations, the property doesn’t feel as though it’s trying to accommodate hundreds of people at once. There is more than enough space for everyone.
The Amenities at Banyan House That Surprised Me
This is where Banyan House punches above its weight.
There are plenty of larger hotels with more impressive amenity lists on paper. But Banyan House provides several things that are genuinely useful for the type of trip most people are taking to Venice.
Complimentary Bikes
Bicycles are available for guests to use, which makes a lot of sense on Venice Island.
Downtown Venice, the beach, restaurants, shops, and other attractions are all relatively close, and having access to a bike gives you another option besides getting into the car every time you want to go somewhere.
For travelers flying into Florida rather than driving, this is an especially nice perk.
Beach Chairs, Umbrellas and Coolers
Banyan House also provides beach equipment, including chairs, towels, umbrellas, coolers, and even ice for your cooler. And, as you can see in the photo, there are also clothes washers and dryers.
These may sound like a minor amenities, but they are truly invaluable when trying to pack light for a trip. Consider how annoying it is to fly somewhere for a few days and then have to buy beach equipment you’ll either leave behind or somehow attempt to squeeze into your luggage.
Having everything waiting for you makes a beach day much easier.
Yes, They Have Shark Tooth Hunting Equipment
Venice isn’t just another Florida beach town. It’s known as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, and people come here specifically to search the beaches and waterways for fossilized shark teeth.
Banyan House leans into that by providing guests with shark tooth scoops and digging equipment.
If you’re visiting Venice specifically to hunt for fossilized shark teeth, that’s a surprisingly useful perk. And if you’re hoping to find something considerably bigger than the little teeth commonly found along the beach, you can also head inland to search for fossils in Florida’s rivers and creeks.

What to Expect
Banyan House is sometimes described as a bed & breakfast, but I wouldn’t arrive expecting the traditional B&B experience of everyone gathering around a dining table for homemade breakfast every morning. What you can expect is unlimited coffee, tea, dry bar snacks, cold bar snacks and drinks at any time of day, which is pretty nice perk.
During our stay, we took advantage of this “continental style” snack bar by enjoying Keurig-poured coffee and light snacks such as instant oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, muffins and yogurt each morning. On our way to the beach, we sometimes grabbed a bag of chips or a fresh-baked guava pastry and some baby bell cheese rounds. It was also nice to have a supply of bottled water nearby throughout the day.
They also always had a healthy, or potentially unhealthy depending on how you think about it, supply of fancy chocolates in dishes around the common area. A nice little treat at the end of a long day.
So, while the breakfast isn’t hot or traditional, I thought it was very convenient and was exactly what we needed on our full days of exploring and fossil hunting.

Location: How Convenient Is Banyan House?
One of Banyan House’s biggest advantages is its location on Venice Island.
You’re positioned between Venice Beach, historic downtown Venice and Casperson Beach, which makes the property a good base if you want to experience it all, from the beach to nightlife, and the coast’s best fossil hunting.
Getting to Historic Downtown Venice
Historic downtown Venice is approximately a mile away.
We quite easily walked from the hotel to the strip on Venice Ave. We did so in the evening and felt safe and comfortable. If walking isn’t your thing, that is what the hotel’s complimentary bike rentals are for. You can also take your car, but the parking may be a problem, especially on festival weekends.
Downtown is where you’ll find restaurants, cafés, boutiques, ice cream shops, and the city’s distinctive historic architecture.
For dinner, I recommend Bodrum, a Mediterranean restaurant on Miami Ave., just south of the main strip. Then head to BellaVino Wine Bar for a relaxing nightcap, or to the Daiquiri Deck for a little livelier nightlife.
Getting to Venice Beach
Venice Beach is also nearby, although Banyan House is not a beachfront property.
That’s an important distinction.
All of the nearby beaches are private. If your priority is waking up, stepping outside, and immediately putting your feet in the sand, there are better options. But if you’re comfortable walking, biking, or making a very short drive to the beach, the tradeoff is that you get a quieter, more intimate property and easier access to downtown.
For me, I was initially disappointed with the private beaches. It was frustrating to be so close to the beach yet be denied access. However, once I got over the initial disappointment, and got to know the property better, I didn’t mind the location at all. In fact, the peaceful and quaint property was well worth the added effort to get to the beach, which is only a mile or two in either direction.
Personally, I also like that it was close to Casperson Beach, which is well known for fossil hunting.
What I Loved About Banyan House
There was a lot I liked about this property, but several things stood out.
1. It Has Personality
I stay in enough hotels that they can eventually begin to blur together.
Banyan House stands apart.
I’ll definitely remember the giant banyan tree, gardens, historic architecture, and eclectic rooms long after I’ve forgotten the beige Marriott room I stayed in six months earlier, or the dingy motel that I used to stay at to save money but is now just about the same price as this place per night.
2. The Amenities Are Actually Useful
Bikes, beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, and shark tooth hunting equipment aren’t flashy amenities. They’re practical ones.
And I’d argue that practical amenities often have a bigger impact on a trip than impressive-sounding features you never actually use.
3. The Small Size Changes the Experience
With only ten accommodations, Banyan House feels intimate. You’re not competing with hundreds of guests for pool chairs or navigating crowded elevators and hotel corridors. The environment begs for conversation with strangers, which is so rare these days.
If you generally prefer boutique hotels and independent properties, you’ll probably appreciate that immediately.
4. What I Loved the Most
What truly stood out about Banyan House was the genuine care that went into every aspect of our stay. The owners are on-site, welcoming, and readily available, and their pride in the property is evident in the thoughtful details throughout. It feels less like a business they simply operate and more like a place they genuinely love sharing with their guests.
The small staff they keep are equally kind and caring. When we arrived, we were greeted by name, given a tour of the property and all of its offerings and personally guided to our room. There was no reasonable need that they would not accommodate.
It just felt that while you stayed there you were like family.
What I Didn’t Love
No hotel is perfect, and pretending otherwise doesn’t help anyone make an informed decision. There is not much that I didn’t love about this hotel, but that’s not the point. A useful hotel review shouldn’t tell you that a property is perfect. It should give you enough information to decide whether its imperfections matter to you.
1. It’s Vintage
One potential drawback of Banyan House is also part of what makes it appealing: it’s old. Travelers who love historic properties may find the eclectic furnishings and quirks charming. I surely did. Travelers who want sleek bathrooms, modern furniture, and contemporary hotel design may not.
2. It’s Not a Modern, Full-Service Property
I also think it’s important to emphasize that this isn’t a full-service resort. There isn’t a restaurant on premise, a sprawling lobby bar, room service, or a concierge desk staffed around the clock. This is important to some travelers, so you should know what you are getting and what you are not.
3. No Direct Beach Access
Then, of course, there is the issue of beach access. You’re not directly on the beach, but you are within a mile or two of some beautiful public beaches. Again, this is a give and take, and I find the quaintness of the hotel well worth the extra effort. Also, the free bikes make getting to the beach easy and breezy.
4. Easy on the Pool Chemicals
Perhaps this was a one-off experience, but the chemicals in the hot tub were definitely overwhelming. Perhaps a balance can be reached between cleanliness and chemicals burning your eyes.
While some of these things could matter to some, none would stop me from staying here again. In fact, this is my new favorite Venice hotel, and I can guarantee that I will be staying here on my next trip to the area.
Who Should Stay at Banyan House?
I dislike declaring a hotel simply “good” or “bad.” The better question is: Is it good for the way you travel?
I would consider it for couples looking for a relaxed Florida getaway, solo travelers, travelers staying several days or longer, fossil and shark tooth hunters, and anyone who generally prefers independent boutique properties over large resorts.
I especially like the apartment options for travelers planning a longer stay. Having a kitchen, living space, complimentary parking, and access to beach equipment makes Banyan House feel more like a home base than simply somewhere to sleep.
It’s also a great match for travelers who care more about character and atmosphere than having modern ammenities.
Who Should Skip It?
I wouldn’t automatically recommend Banyan House to everyone visiting Venice.
If your idea of vacation revolves around a full-service beachfront resort, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for. Likewise, travelers who strongly prefer contemporary luxury, onsite restaurants and bars, extensive hotel services, or ultra-modern accommodations would probably be happier elsewhere.
And because of the nature of the property and its accommodations, I’d carefully evaluate it before recommending it for families traveling with younger children.
Is Banyan House Worth the Price?
When evaluating Banyan House, I wouldn’t compare the nightly rate to another hotel or vacation rental without considering what you’re actually getting: a mix of hotel amenities and home stay charm and convivence.
Depending on the accommodation you choose, your stay can include a kitchen or kitchenette, complimentary parking, bikes, beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, shark tooth hunting equipment, access to the pool and hot tub, and other shared amenities.
Some of those things can save you money. Others simply save you hassle. And convenience has value, particularly on a short vacation when you don’t want to spend your first afternoon driving around Venice buying beach chairs and a cooler.
Based on my experience, I feel like you cannot expect better than Banyan House in its pricing tier. In fact, it blows other similarly priced hotels I’ve stayed at out of the water.

Banyan House isn’t trying to compete with Venice’s beachfront resorts, and I don’t think it should. Its strength is offering something entirely different: a small, historic property with character, unusually thoughtful amenities, and a location that puts you within easy reach of both downtown Venice and the beach.
Would I recommend this hotel to my clients? Absolutely! For the right traveler, that appreciates a boutique stay and simple, but thoughtful details and amenities, I would recommend a stay at Banyan House in a heartbeat.
