A Dive Paradise for Macro Lovers: Discover Anilao, Philippines
Looking for the best macro diving in The Philippines?
If you’re a diver who’s ever geeked out over the perfect photo of a frogfish (like myself) or been mesmerized by the hypnotic movement of a flamboyant cuttlefish (also like me), then Anilao should be at the very top of your list. As a scuba instructor who’s explored underwater worlds from Thailand to the Caribbean, I can confidently say Anilao is one of the richest and most rewarding dive destinations on Earth, especially for macro and muck diving enthusiasts.
Situated just a few hours south of Manila on the main island of Luzon, Anilao is the heart of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine region in the world. It’s known not only for its wealth of strange and wonderful critters but also for its accessibility, professional dive operators, and warm, welcoming dive community.

What Makes Anilao Special?
For many divers The Philippines is high on their bucket list for a variety of reasons. It has long held the reputation of the most biodiverse marine environment, and top diving destination on the planet. But, with the sheer number of islands in this archipelago nation, it can be absolutely overwhelming to decide exactly what island to choose.
For lovers of all thing’s macro, the choice is simple: Anilao.
While Anilao has its fair share of stunning coral reefs and vibrant drop-offs, it’s the macro diving that puts it on the map. Think nudibranchs in every color imaginable, mimic octopuses, blue-ringed octopuses, shrimp gobies, hairy frogfish, and Bobbit worms–the works! The biodiversity here is off the charts, the colors are spectacular, and many photographers consider it on par with Indonesia’s Lembeh Strait.

Getting to Anilao, Philippines
Travel Tips:
- Fly into Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport – MNL).
- From Manila, it’s about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive to Anilao depending on traffic. Many resorts offer private van transfers, or you can arrange one through a trusted travel agent, like myself. Public transportation is also available, but I would not recommend it as it can be complicated if you have dive gear.
- Bring your own dive gear if possible; while rental gear is available, serious photographers and divers prefer their own equipment. As a dive professional, the only piece of equipment I choose to leave at home is my BCD, since they can get bulky and are not always easy to dry for the trip home. Read more about packable dive gear here.
- Stay hydrated—the tropical sun is no joke, and you end up sweating more than you realize while you are diving, especially if you have to battle a current.
- Local currency (Philippine Peso) is essential for small expenses, though many resorts accept cards.
- Wi-Fi can be spotty; download offline maps and bring entertainment like a book or card game if you are staying somewhere remote.

Bonus: Non-Diving Activities in Anilao
Even if you have a non-diver in your group, or you want to take a surface interval day (we all have one of these on the day before we fly)—Anilao has more to offer than just what’s beneath the surface.
- Snorkeling – The same sites that make for great diving are often shallow and calm enough for snorkeling, especially Twin Rocks.
- Island Hopping – Nearby islands like Sombrero or Sepoc Island are perfect for beach picnics and kayaking.
- Mt. Gulugod Baboy Trek – A light 2–4-hour hike with gorgeous coastal views.
- Massage & Spa Services – Many resorts offer in-room or beachfront massages.
- Sunset Watching – The golden-hour views over Balayan Bay are stunning, ideal with a cocktail in hand and a dive buddy by your side.
