How to Get To & Around Greece
Most international travelers arrive in Greece via Athens International Airport (ATH), the country’s main gateway. Athens is well connected year-round to major European hubs, with seasonal nonstop flights from North America and Canada.
If you’re flying from the United States or Canada, nonstop routes typically operate from late spring through early fall from cities like New York, Newark, Chicago, Boston, Toronto, and Montreal. Outside those months, one-stop connections through London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Rome are usually the most efficient.
ETIAS Requirements Explained
From 2026, along with a valid passport with at least 3 months of validity, U.S. residents will need to fill out an ETIAS form and pay a fee to gain entry into Greece and other Schengen nations. Once approved, the authorization is electronically linked to your passport, and can be used for stays of up to 90 days in a 180 day period in any Schengen nation. These 90 days can be consecutive or split up into several trips within the 180 day period.
Getting from the Airport to Central Athens
- Metro Line 3 (Blue Line): Direct to Syntagma Square in about 40 minutes
- Airport Express Bus (X95): Runs 24/7 and stops in central Athens
- Taxi: Fixed-rate fares apply to the city center (higher at night)
Pro Tip: If you’re arriving after a long overnight flight, a pre-booked transfer can be worth the added cost for ease and comfort.
What to Know About Transportation Around Greece
Once in Greece, domestic flights and ferries make it easy to connect Athens with other desirable destinations. You’ll find that Greece is very navigable with a mix of transportation styles. I recommend the following:
- Athens: The city is easily navigated by Metro, walking, and taxis
- Mainland (Nafplio & Peloponnese): Rental car is highly recommended
- Meteora: Best done via a guided day tour from Athens. You can also do this on your own with a rental car, but the day will be long and the logistics can be a nightmare
- Islands: Flights save time; ferries are scenic but weather-dependent; a car rental can be helpful depending on how much freedom you want touring around

- Athens (2 days)
Athens is the natural starting point for any first trip to Greece. It’s home to the country’s most iconic attractions, including the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, and offers an excellent introduction to Greek history, culture, and cuisine. - Meteora Monasteries (full-day excursion)
Meteora is consistently listed as one of the top attractions in Greece, and for good reason. The cliff-top monasteries feel otherworldly and provide a dramatic contrast to Athens’ classical ruins. Visiting as a day trip allows you to experience it without changing hotels. - Nafplio (3 days)
Nafplio is a relatively short drive from Athens and combines seaside relaxation with easy access to some of Greece’s most important ancient sites. Using Nafplio as a base allows you to explore Mycenae and Epidaurus while still enjoying a charming coastal town with great food, walkability, and slower evenings. - Santorini (2 days)

My intention was to be as detailed as possible, while also providing flexibility and choice, as well as much need rest days to accommodate different types of travelers.
You’ll notice two additional travel days for arrival and departure, bringing the total trip length to 12 days. Those bookend days are intentional. Greece travel often involves flights, ferries, and longer transfer days, and separating arrival and departure from sightseeing helps keep the trip relaxed rather than rushed.
- Arrival Day: Designed for settling in, adjusting to the time zone, and enjoying a low-key evening. No major activities are planned so you can ease into the trip.
- Departure Day: Focused on returning to Athens with enough buffer time to comfortably connect with an evening international flight, avoiding last-minute ferry or flight stress.
- Days 1–10 are the core sightseeing days and can be shifted slightly based on ferry schedules or flight availability.
- Destination change days prioritize morning flights or ferries, leaving afternoons and evenings free to explore at a comfortable pace.
The itinerary works well as written but is easy to adjust for slower travel, additional island time, or different travel priorities.

Arrival Day
Use your arrival day to settle in and shake off jet lag.
After landing at Athens International Airport, take the metro, taxi, or a private transfer into the city. Stay somewhere walkable like Plaka, Koukaki, or Monastiraki so you can enjoy a relaxed evening stroll.
Grab dinner and a cocktail, and get your first glimpse of the Acropolis glowing at night at a rooftop restaurant like the Attic Urban Rooftop.
Day 1: Athens Highlights
Today is all about The Acropolis. Get an early start to beat the crowds and heat.
Morning
- Enter the Acropolis at opening time to avoid peak crowds and heat (It opens at 8AM, but get there at 7:30-7:45 to beat the lines and watch the flag raising ceremony)
- Walk the full circuit: Parthenon → Erechtheion → Temple of Athena Nike
- Don’t skip the Theatre of Dionysus on the way down
Late Morning / Afternoon
- Head straight to the Acropolis Museum while the context is fresh
- You’ll want to wander for at least 3-4 hours. Spend time on:
- The Caryatids gallery
- The Parthenon frieze level
- As you’ve built up an appetite with all of that museum strolling, lunch nearby in Makrygianni (Opos Palia is a block away and serves delicious authentic Greek dishes)
Evening
- Wander the neighborhoods boardering the Acropolis
- Plaka for shopping on cobbled lanes
- Anafiotika for quaint historic village vibes
- Monastiraki for more ancient ruins such as Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Forum. You can also grab a bite at the popular Mnisikleous Stairs

You can do a lot of sightseeing on your own, but when it comes to sights that have a deep history, or that require logistical acrobatics it’s sometimes best to have some guideance. These are the tours I personally recommend while in Athens.
Day 2: Meteora Monasteries Day Trip
Today is long, but unforgettable.
A full-day guided excursion from Athens (link to tour in the box above) takes you north to Meteora, where centuries-old monasteries perch atop towering rock pillars. You’ll typically visit two to three monasteries, learning about monastic life while taking in some of the most dramatic scenery in Greece.
Expect an early start (6AM) and a late return (10-11PM), but this experience is absolutely worth dedicating a full day to.
Pro Tip: These tours typically include a stop for lunch, but bring snacks and water for in between. Also, dress appropriately by covering shoulders and knees. Some monasteries will provide wraps, but it’s always best to come prepared. Also, expect stairs and cobbled or uneven paths; sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
Day 3: Athens to Nafplio via the Corinth Canal
Nafplio is one of Greece’s most charming towns; romantic, walkable, and rich in history.
Morning
- Pick up rental car in Athens and drive south toward the Peloponnese peninsula (about 2–2.5 hours)
- Stop at the Corinth Canal viewpoint (10–15 minutes is plenty of time to snap a few photos and watch a ship or two navigate the narrow passageway)
Afternoon
- Check into your hotel in Nafplio Old Town
- Spend the afternoon leisurely exploring the Old Town, waterfront promenade, and lively squares

- Enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants on the promenade by the harbor

Day 4: Mycenae & Palamidi Fortress
Morning
- Drive to Mycenae (30–40 minutes), one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece
- Must-see highlights:
- Lion Gate
- Grave Circle A
- Treasury of Atreus
- Visit the museum before leaving the site, many find it better than the ruins themselves
Afternoon
- Lunch back in Nafplio, there are plenty of excellent choices
- Climb the 999 steps (or taxi up) to Palamidi Fortress for sweeping views over the Argolic Gulf. If you time it right the sunset from here is spectacular.
Evening
- Dinner in Old Town
- Stop by Periklis Winosophy to learn about and savor some of the regions top wines
Day 5: Epidaurus & Nafplio Coastal Walk
Morning
- Drive to the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (about 45 minutes), famed for its near-perfect acoustics
- Sit in the upper tiers to test the acoustics
- Explore the sanctuary ruins nearby
Afternoon
- Return to Nafplio for lunch
- Take a boat ride to Bourtzi Castle (weather permitting). The small boats leave the harbor about every 30 minutes from the harbor (visiting hours of the castle change throughout the year so be sure to check the schedule here)
- Walk the Acronauplia Fortress, a short hike from town for stunning town and harbor views
- Do the Arvanitia Coastal Walk in late afternoon light, one of the prettiest seaside walks in mainland Greece
Evening
- Enjoy a final relaxed night in Nafplio
Day 6: Fly to Santorini
Early Morning
Drive back to Athens Airport in the early morning, return your rental car, and catch a short flight to Santorini around mid-day.
Late Afternoon
After checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon soaking in caldera views over a glass of wine and wandering Fira and Imerovigli.
Evening
End the day with a sunset dinner in Fira overlooking the volcanic cliffs.

- Hike from Fira to Oia on a scenic seaside path along the caldera through white-washed towns (2.5- 3 hours if you hustle, but you should take your time)
- Stop for a snack at Ilios Bakery in Imerovigli, and/or a late lunch at Santorini Mou, just outside of Oia
Mid-day
- When you get to Oia via hike or boat seek out the perfect photo opt of the famed blue domes, near the Church of Panagia Akathistos Hymn.
- Make your way to Armeni Beach to dip your tired feet in the cool clear water as the sun begins to set
Evening
- Sunset away from peak crowds if possible. Castle of Agios Nikolaos is the most popular spot with the iconic views of the windmills and town, but the blue domes area can also serve stunning views, or back along the caldera path
- Make a reservation for a seaside dinner in Oia
Day 8: Ferry to Paros
Morning
Take an early morning ferry from Santorini to Paros (remember to pre-book the port transfer). Travel times vary depending on the route and ferry type, but fast ferries typically take between 2 – 4 hours.
Pro Tip: Sit outside on the ferry if seas are calm; the views are part of the experience
Afternoon
After checking into your hotel, head to Livadia Beach for some relaxation before exploring Parikia’s old town
